Filmmaker Bio:
Jade Dandan Evangelista aka Wetsipon is a typical kid with the love of drawing and creating. She is a digital native artist and relatively started late in her pencil skills but when the images formed, she never stopped. She expresses herself in music, coding, clay sculpting, drawing, video and animation. As of production/ submission, she is currently in grade 5 as a homeschooler at Homeschool Global - Wellspring Christian Family School.
These short films are part of a collection of animation shorts presenting individual folk tales from the regions, as a homeschool tandem, we were looking for resources that highlight our culture, though after reading some from limited online and academic references, we notice we have a lack of it.
In text books we notice they stick to a handful of classics, often remolded to super heroes, glossed up or made pop. (Disneyfied, Marvelized or sanitized.) Unlike the popular styling, we want our mermaids ending in foam and not living any ever afters. We are not looking for morals or character developments, we want to keep it pure as it was told, we wanted to pursue the intention of keeping the stories (edits are just made to be appropriate to the age level of the collaborator which is inevitable since she is part of the creation process. She is 11 years old. ) and pass it on to the next generation
